Tactics:
Chamber makes progress with eNewsletter

Situation
To be effective in serving its membership, the Greater Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce relies on effective communication of issues, services and programs. Earlier this year, the Chamber successfully launched a new web site to help tell its story, while it continued to send periodic messages and newsletters to its members via the U.S. Mail.

Problem
Postal rate hikes were making it increasingly expensive for the Chamber to communicate with its membership and other publics through the traditional channel of the U.S. Mail. While the technology of the Internet offered the Chamber the cost-effective solution of an eNewsletter, the organization wanted to be sure its communication carried the look and feel of its new web site and included news of issues, members and events.

Solution
The Chamber called on MillerWhite, LLC to design a functional eNewsletter that reflected its new web site look. Along with the Chamber’s Marketing Committee, MillerWhite developed “e-Progress,” a monthly eNewsletter that is sent to the entire membership base. Each issue features news and events and highlights a Chamber member business in the form of a monthly sponsor.

Results
Rod Henry, president of the Greater Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, explains how the new eNewsletter helps the Chamber reach its membership and saves time as well. “The Chamber newsletter has allowed us to reach our members in a way never possible before,” Henry said. “The online newsletter is clean, professional-looking and easy for our members to navigate. Our members look forward to each issue where they can learn about important initiatives or follow a link to register online for upcoming events. Instead of sending out an individual eMail for each event, ‘e-Progress’ allows us to combine all information into one
eMail, then distribute it to our membership.”

A reader, reacting to the Chamber’s eNewsletter, said, “I can't tell you how much I enjoy ‘e-Progress!’ This type of communication is about the only way I read news anymore, so it is appreciated. Also, good professional design!"
